This might be the most important track on the album for
me because it marks the beginning of the whole process.
I struggled with Graves, an autoimmune disease that
affects your thyroid. During the recovery (it took about 2
years and a half), I felt like I was in a constant state of
apathy due to the medication. The week I finally went off
the meds and they would check if my thyroid regained its
normal function, I felt a giant rush of emotions and energy
flowing back. That moment has had an enormous impact
on my life and my outlook on life. It taught me how
important it is to be in touch with your feelings and to be
able to listen to your intuitive gut feeling. "Residue &
Lovers' Dust" is the last sentence of this song. It speaks
about the dust that settled on every thought about every
emotion in that 2 year period, that all of a sudden got
removed. I now felt I had to process a huge amount of
emotions because that part of me stood still for so long.
"I will live again, I will love again, My heart it pumps
again": During the recordings we sampled my heartbeat
with a stethoscope and used it as the beat.
The way I write songs completely changed after this week
into some sort of a personal journal. It felt so special and
intense to be able to listen to my own feelings again. In
order to trust them I wrote everything down. Every song
on the album is a direct reflection of that.
